Lastly, Glofish may be helpful to the environment in the future. Scientists are currently in the developmental stages of creating Glofish that will be able to detect pollutants and be temperature indicators. Firstly, scientists are working on developing Glofish that can detect pollutants in water. According to the National University of Singapore, there are currently five different colours of Glofish. If successful, researchers believe they may be able to make each colour will be able to indicate a different toxin present in the water (Gong, 2003). Although Glofish can not survive in the wild, if researchers can successfully create Glofish that can detect toxins, then they may be able to put those proteins and DNA into other fish that can survive in the wild. This will be beneficial to the environment because the fish will be able to detect the toxins in the water and biologist will be able to tell what the toxin is and treat it to clean waterways and bodies of water. Additionally, if this venture is successful in detecting toxins in the water, it will benefit entire towns and communities. This is because the Glofish would detect the chemical or toxin in the water that is potentially dangerous to the community, and treat it before it became a big issue. Lastly, researchers are currently working towards producing Glofish that give off a different colour glow depending on water temperatures. If successful, researchers will be able to determine the approximate temperature of a body of water without using any equipment that may be potentially harmful to the environment (NUS, 2011). This would be beneficial because scientists would be able to detect any major temperature changes in a body of water, signalling the major effects of global warming. Thus, if scientists can use the Glofish to detect changes in water temperature and if pollutants are present in water, then they may aid in stopping the deterioration of our waterways, bodies of water and overall environment.
