General Information

Glofish were developed by scientists for the purpose of detecting pollution in waterways. They are produced by inserting a fluorescent protein gene from a jellyfish or a sea anemone into a zebrafish embryo. The fish grow and reproduce, passing on the fluorescent gene to their offspring. Due to interest from the public, Glofish were made available for commercial sale by the patent owner, Yorktown Technologies. Currently, Glofish may only be sold in the United States (excluding California), Malaysia, and Hong Kong due to strict regulations in many countries regarding the production and importation of genetically modified organisms. Glofish are unique in that they are some of the first GMOs to be kept as pets (Glofish.com, 2010).
